Recently our class had a heated discussion about whether it is important to protect cultural heritage. We are all divided in opinion about it.

Most cultural heritage is related to great people, so protecting it shows respect for them. Cultural heritage is of great value and protecting it can make us feel proud of our nation.

Actively  participating in societies helps us to develop in an all-round manner.

As teenagers get  older, they undergo great physical and psychological changes. They may not  have the wisdom to make good choices in their behavior. In the social world,  they struggle to depend on themselves. They may badly want and need their  parents’ love, yet feel distant; they may want to be part of the group, yet  desire independence. Since teenagers have difficulty balancing these needs,  they often question who they are and how they fit in society.

Some weight  control methods like crash diets and diet pills can be harmful or even fatal.  The long-term abuse of pills doesn’t result in a slim figure but they do have  side effects: physical and psychological problems. While some of those  weight-loss pills may result in initial weight loss for the first couple of  weeks, the effects will soon wear off. Experts say that students need to  choose the safest and simplest method to lose weight. It’s recommended to  consult a doctor about whether you need to lose weight or not and what plan  best suits you. There is no need at all for a perfectly normal girl to take a  lot of trouble to lose weight. Health is the primary concern.

According to our  survey, we have found that over half the students surveyed often play sports.  The most popular sport is basketball, which is played by 45% of the students.  This is followed by football, which 40% of the students often play. A small  number of students play other sports, such as table tennis.We recommend  offering students more sports. For this reason, we suggest that we organize a  school basketball tournament, since basketball is the most popular sport in  the school. Each class would have its own basketball team which would  practice several afternoons a week. Then on sports day, the classes could  compete against each other. We could offer awards to the winning team and the  most enthusiastic players. This would be a good way to build the school  spirit with an activity that many students enjoy.

Tu Youyou has  become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her work in helping  to create an anti-malaria medicine. The result has saved millions of lives.  She started her malaria research after she was recruited to a top-secret  government unit. Ancient Chinese texts inspired her search for her  Nobel-prize winning medicine. She first tested her medicine on herself to  ensure it was safe. She is consistently cited for her drive and passion. She  is described as a "tough and stubborn woman". Stubborn enough to  spend decades piecing together ancient texts and apply them to modern  scientific practices.

Someone who doesn’t understand  others’ sacrifice and never appreciates others’ help does not deserve it.  It’s human nature to seek approval for good deeds. •保护方言的意义。背景：继上海打响本地方言的“保卫战”之后，前不久广州市有政协委员建议广州电视台改用普通话播新闻。此消息立刻引起各方很大的反响。有人认为应该淡化推广普通话而强化方言。

（支持）As an important  part of our cultural heritage, dialects have a value that deserves our  attention. Dialects stand for the diversity of civilization. With a wide  variety of dialects, different customs are passed on and color added to life.  Without dialects, a lot of local culture would be lost and, in the long run,  it would affect the development of the nation. We should protect dialects by  making sure we teach them to the younger generation and also encourage their  use on TV and in daily life.（反对）Putonghua should  be used in formal situations like the classroom and during broadcasts. Due to  its vast territory, China has a large number of dialects, which also means  that people from different regions would find it hard to understand each  other without a standard language. This makes the use of Putonghua essential.  A dialect is not usually understood easily by people outside of the area  where it is spoken. It is impossible to imagine modern life without  Putonghua, so it’s important to encourage its use in class and media.

    Old villages are  “museums” for heritage, religion and culture. They are the roots of Chinese  civilization. The dying out of ancient villages will worsen the moral decline  in modern Chinese society. There are three  reasons old villages are being wiped from the map: urbanization, natural  disasters and a lack of labor in the countryside. Cities and villages are not  two opposing parties. Urbanization does not necessarily lead to the  countryside dying out. There are many examples in European countries of  cities and villages co-existing in harmony. Protecting  ancient villages does not just mean renovating old houses but also respecting  cultural roots and traditions.

 

M4U1•Project话题：Anti-smoking ad campaign •反吸烟广告宣传活动

    Some teenagers  think that smoking is cool or enjoyable, but they are not fully aware of the  potential damage that it does. Smoking is not attractive at all because it  makes people smell terrible, and gives them bad teeth, skin, and fingernails.  Smoking kills. Every packet of cigarettes contains poisonous chemicals that  can result in lung cancer and heart disease. In order to discourage young  people from smoking, we will put posters around the school with our logo and  slogan. We will also publish an article in the school magazine informing  students about the dangers of smoking, and we will organize an essay  competition as well.

   Life too often  becomes a tough game with more losers than winners. When claiming the prize  eliminates the good in playing, no one wins. Real rewards come from teamwork  and playing the game unselfishly for the good of the whole. Winning is more  than being number one. Winning is helping another in a difficult situation,  especially one in which you realize what is really true or important. In  defeat, we sometimes find something more precious than victory; we can find  friendship, honor and respect.

    Schools will be  different in many ways from what they are now. First, students will be  different. They will be any age, from any place, and they will be free to  choose any class they want. Second, the courses will be different. There will  be many more courses for students to choose from, and most courses will be  offered on the Internet. Students will choose to learn at home on the  Internet, or at school from teachers. They can also choose the teachers they  like. School buildings and equipment will be much better than they are now.  Everything will be run by computers, more modern, and easy for students to  use.     Individual  actions can help avoid a catastrophe caused by climate change. We can check  daily lives to see where they can reduce their carbon dioxide emissions,  which are blamed for global warming. We can take action by living low energy,  low carbon lifestyles. When we’re environmentally conscious, we go to school  by bike, save water in the toilet, reuse old test papers, and plant more  trees. Besides, we can launch a campaign to promote low carbon lifestyles on  the campus. M5U3    Project话题：GM food: hope or danger? 转基因食品带来的是希望还是危险

    GM has been used  to produce plants which are better able to defend themselves against pests  and disease. Supporters of GM food argue that GM plants are healthier and  have larger harvests. However, many questions have raised about GM food. No  one really knows whether it is safe for animals or humans to eat. More tests  should be done on GM food. There is also a question as to whether GM plants  are safe for the environment. No one knows what effects the GM material might  have on the food chain. Since no one really knows whether GM food is safe, we  should be cautious with this new technology.

   In all  relationships, at work or home, humor lets people handle stressful events in  a calm and wise way. It is an inexpensive, readily available way to cope with  stress. Laughter is the best medicine. Laughter provides physical release  from stress. When people laugh, they take deeper breaths. More oxygen means  better circulation. People who enjoy humor perform better than those with  little or no sense of humor. A day without laughter is a day wasted.

    Happiness is not  something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the  present. Here are three ways to find happiness. First, practice  generosity. Generosity can mean volunteering, donating to a charity, lending  your things to others, or simply being kind to others with your words and  emotions. As you give a little love to someone else, you’ll feel better too. Second, Ask for  help. Despite the fears you have about seeming weak or incompetent, you’ll  feel happy that you’ve asked for help when you see people show up for you in  time. Third, try new  things. By going beyond your comfort zone, it opens up the possibility for  you to enjoy something new. It keeps you from becoming bored, and perhaps  most importantly, it forces you to grow.

6U3   单元话题：Understanding  each other •文化差异。有媒体报道，中国人出游所表现出来的种种形象“丢了中国人的脸”。也有人认为喜欢聚众、大声说话只是一种习惯而已，我们还看不惯有些外国人那种小声嘀嘀咕咕的习惯呢。你对此怎么看？

   （支持）There are lots of  cultural differences between different peoples. In many Western countries, it  is rude to make noises when eating noodles. But in Japan, it is not.  Westerners do not like to speak loudly in public places, but in China, people  like it. It’s hard to say who is right. It’s natural that there exist  cultural differences between peoples. I don’t think it’s a bad habit. It’s  just a characteristic of the Chinese. Thanks to all of these different  customs, the world is culturally diversified.

  （反对）Customs and  habits may be different from country to country. But there are many universal  codes of behavior that everyone should follow. Only by following these codes  can different peoples get along well with each other. Speaking loudly in  public places should not be regarded as the “custom” of the entire nation.  It’s just a bad habit of some people. It’s rude and offensive because you may  disturb others when you speak loudly in public places. It’s not a matter of  cultural difference. It has damaged the image of China. As the saying goes,  when in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in foreign countries, we should  respect their customs. Only in this way can we be welcomed there.

    For many people,  volunteering means giving out you give your time and talent to take part in  activities that benefit others. In fact, however, volunteering is  win-win–while you’re helping others, you get experience and joy from the work  itself. For example, you can learn skills, make new friends and build  confidence. The traditional  way is to donate free time to help people in need. Volunteers visit homes of  older people and orphans, or care for homeless people. Compared to  traditional volunteering, skill-based volunteering requires volunteers to  have certain professional knowledge or receive special training. For example,  in China many children volunteer to become narrators in museums. They receive  history and communication lessons before so that they can tell the stories  behind a masterpiece to visitors. Besides, a person  can volunteer to protect the environment. You can join NGO (非政府组织) and  volunteer to plant trees, recycle rubbish and clean neighborhood. Although  volunteering takes up our time and can be challenging sometimes, it shows our  care for others. When people benefit from your help, it can change the way you look at yourself.
